The client wanted a cute and bright design featuring a mascot, so the first part of the process was all about designing a character that could be used more flexibly than their preexisting bear mascot. Initially, I was putting body copy in several colors, but this approach was a little too frivolous for the purposes of the document. Regular copy was made smaller and in dark grey, while accents were kept in vibrant colors used for each chapter. Here, I compared the rise and fall of the science of cartography to the explosive rise of the punk rock movement and its subsequent selling out/gentrification.
